Name our owl mascots

Feedback thus far on the look-and-feel of the Calgoo Draft One web site has been positive. We’ve been trying to keep it clean, easy-to-read, and carefree — kind of like what we’ve been trying to do with the product itself (less than 30 days until product launch now). In fact, nearly everyone that we’ve shown the site to has said the same thing:

“The site looks good. I like the owls. Do they have names?”

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your perspective), all of us were rather too quick on our feet and said, “Of course…but you’ll have to wait until the product launches.”

This, of course, was stretching the truth somewhat. They don’t have names. Frankly, we didn’t think about that. Not sure why not…perhaps it is because we’ve been hard at work on other things, like building the product.

So this is where you come in. We need your help in choosing names for the little critters. After all, this is a Social Web sort of thing to do these days…isn’t it?

Starting today, we are holding a contest with the winner not only getting the glory of naming our mascots, but they also get to choose a prize from our just launched Shop Calgoo Cafe Press Store (it literally just launched as we decided that we needed to come up with some sort of prize).

The rules are pretty simple. Simply respond by posting your suggestion in the comments section below (and perhaps via a few other ways that we are working on). If there are ties, the winner is the first person to suggest the idea. Deadline for submissions is for two months from tonight (Sept. 20, 2006 at 11:59 PM PST).

All voting will take place by a show of hands around our boardroom table. And yes, we can be swayed by public opinion. Feel free to launch any sort of campaign you want.

How about “Web 2.wit” and “Web 2.woo”?

After intense scrutiny, and boy, let me tell you, I look ant those owls long and I hard; I believe that I would call them Tall and Lean. Why you ask? Well, 1 owl stands tall, while the other leans over…..

    Al and Tipper.

I like the sound of “Al the Owl.” Corny yes, but not too cutesy. Tipper, well, it’s just descriptive. And besides, it’s a good name for the partner of someone named Al.

It’s been six years. Al Gore is not going to have a presidential library named after him. Might as well let something be named after him. Actually with his strong neck, when he turns his head he kind of looks like an owl.

Al sits there on his branch, telling us we need to wake up and watch out, there is an inconvenient truth on the march. Pay attention. Watch the calendar. Don’t procrastinate. Time is not on our side. Heed the words of the wise. Act now, before it’s too late. Al the Owl, not that far removed from the real Al, the husband of Tipper.

Which brings us to Tipper the Owl. Tipper is all about reminding you to get a move on (get it, MoveOn? honestly, the pun was not intended), thus the tipping to the right, before your jammed-up calendar reaches a tipping point and gets the better of you.

Vote for Al and Tipper in 2006!

    Thank you very much.

I went for days of the week in Latin. One should be Mercurii (Wed) and Solis(Sunday).

    Good luck with the company.

    Cheers,

    Beth

Well I suppose my inside joke was perhaps lost on you Canadians :-). Al Gore’s wife is named Tipper, if that helps my previous post make any sense.

Good luck on finding truly appropriate names for the owls!

    Hi Natch,

I’ve got good news for you – Al and Tipper made it into the Top 20 on our list of suggested Owl names. That means we either had lots of American entrants or lots of educated Canadian entrants 😉

With the release of Calgoo Second Draft we have changed the download screens so that new users don’t get asked for their suggestions. We are compiling the results now and should be able to announce the winning names nest week.

    Watch this space.

  12. Natch says:

So did the owls ever get named?

  13. chiefowl says:

Thanks for asking. We named them “Bill and Joy”. Since then we have rebranded and have just one owl in our logo. Perhaps we should start a new naming competition for this owl.
